Ronkonkoma LIRR Station- Bio-retention Basin
Project Location: Ronkonkoma, NY
Client: Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District
NPV assisted the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in conjunction with Suffolk County with design and installation of a bio-retention area for a parking lot expansion at the Ronkonkoma LIRR Station. The parking lot area directs stormwater to two inlets for the bio-retention basin on the south side of the lot and stormwater overflow from the basin enters the existing stormwater system in the parking area. The volume available within the bio-retention basin is able to capture the 1.5” 24-hour storm event. By capturing the first flush of stormwater, the bioretention area is designed to removed pollutants in stormwater prior to recharge. The bioretention area was planted with native species and NPV designed educational signage for the basin. NPV provided cost estimates, construction documents, construction inspection, and layout of the planting and planting.
