Nelson Pope Voorhis (“NPV”) has immediate openings for experienced Senior Environmental Planners and Environmental Scientists with experience in the preparation of Environmental Impact Statements and all aspects of compliance with the requirements of the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in our Melville office.  Work assignments will involve management and development of technical sections for environmental impact analysis, management of technical analysis prepared by subconsultants and compilation of Draft and Final EIS documents.  Ideally the candidate will have experience working directly with clients and review agencies; and experience with providing expert testimony at public hearings.  Competent writing, research, organizational and analytical skills are required.  This is a mid to senior level position with opportunities to work in a wide range of services to have impact and positive change on the environment as well as advance in senior management.  Experienced individuals interested in part time positions should also apply.

The position requires strong technical writing and analytical skills, project management experience, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, agencies, elected officials, and the public.

Responsibilities

Project Leadership and Management

• Manage environmental planning and review projects from proposal through completion.
• Direct multidisciplinary teams, including staff, subconsultants, and technical specialists.
• Establish project schedules, budgets, and staffing assignments.
• Prepare and review project deliverables for technical accuracy and quality.
• Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, municipalities, and project stakeholders.

Environmental Review and Planning

• Prepare and oversee environmental analyses and environmental review documents under SEQRA, NEPA, and CEQR.
• Manage preparation of Draft and Final Environmental Impact Statements.
• Conduct research, data collection, and technical analysis.
• Prepare planning studies, policy recommendations, and regulatory analyses.
• Develop and review graphics, GIS mapping, figures, and presentation materials.

Business Development and Client Relations

• Participate in proposal preparation, interviews, and marketing efforts.
• Identify and pursue new project opportunities.
• Build and maintain relationships with municipal, agency, and private-sector clients.
• Represent the firm at public meetings, hearings, workshops, and professional conferences.

Staff Development

• Mentor and support junior planning and environmental staff.
• Assist with recruiting, training, and professional development initiatives.
• Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across disciplines.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Planning, Geography, Natural Resources, Ecology, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in environmental planning, environmental review, or a related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of project management experience.
• Demonstrated experience managing environmental review documents and technical studies.
• Strong technical writing, research, analytical, and organizational skills.
• Working knowledge of SEQRA, NEPA, CEQR, and related environmental regulations.
• Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting schedules and budgets.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including public presentation experience.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while independently managing assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Planning, Geography, Public Policy, Ecology, or a related field.
• More than 10 years of professional experience.
• Experience serving municipal clients and review boards.
• AICP, CEP, CFM, CPESC, or other relevant professional certifications.
• Experience with GIS, mapping, and spatial analysis tools.
• Experience preparing proposals and supporting business development activities.

Position Overview

The Environmental Scientist is a technical professional responsible for environmental impact analysis, regulatory compliance, and preparation of environmental review documentation pursuant to the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and, where applicable, City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR). This position emphasizes scientific and technical environmental analysis, impact assessment, and regulatory coordination and permitting.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the management of environmental review projects and technical analyses from project initiation through completion.
• Perform environmental and zoning regulatory analyses.
• Prepare and oversee technical sections of Environmental Impact Statements (DEIS/FEIS), Environmental Assessments, and related environmental review documents.
• Conduct environmental analyses involving natural resources, wetlands, water resources, ecological systems, land use compatibility, and cumulative impacts.
• Coordinate and review technical studies prepared by subconsultants and subject matter experts.
• Identify potential environmental impacts and develop practical mitigation strategies.
• Support permitting and regulatory compliance efforts under applicable state and federal programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Policy, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
• 2 years of relevant professional experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience preparing or managing environmental review documents under SEQRA and/or NEPA; CEQR experience is a plus.
• Strong understanding of New York environmental regulations, permitting processes, and environmental review procedures.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams and managing project schedules and budgets.
• Excellent technical writing, analytical, research, and organizational skills.
• Experience presenting before municipal boards, agencies, or at public hearings is desirable.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with GIS and environmental data analysis tools is preferred.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments in a collaborative consulting environment.

An affiliate firm of Nelson Pope Voorhis, ECG is a geotechnical company that provides geological and environmental sampling services, as well as groundwater monitoring well installations.

The work includes assisting the Driller with the operation of hollow stem auger and direct push drill rigs for geotechnical and environmental investigation.

Responsibilities/Top Skills/Qualifications:

• Operating hollow stem auger and direct push drill rigs
• Monitoring drilling process
• Monitoring site safety while adhering to all safety regulations
• Assembling and disassembling rig components
• Routine maintenance of equipment – greasing, cleaning, and maintaining tools and machinery in proper working order
• Physically able to work outdoors year-round
• Available for early morning start times
• Class a cdl to operate truck/trailer over 26,000 pounds – preferred
