Violet Cove Redevelopment Design
Project Location: Mastic Beach, NY
Client: Suffolk County Department of Economic Development & Planning
Nelson Pope Voorhis with affiliate Nelson + Pope were recently selected as part of a team led by nARCHITECTS by Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning to assist with the Violet Cove Redevelopment Design Project in Mastic Beach.
Violets Cove is an approximately 1.27-acre waterfront property that was formerly developed with a private marina and restaurant. The improvements on the site were heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy and was acquired by Suffolk County in 2014. Since then, the County has obtained funding through the New York State Department of State under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund for design services for a project to advance the County’s goals to improve waterfront access and promote recreation, education and environmental stewardship at the site and throughout the Mastic Beach Conservation Area. A kayak launch, which was recommended in the Suffolk County Blueway Trail Plan prepared by NPV, will be a component of the site design.
The NPV/N+P team is currently preparing an inventory and analysis of the site conditions and project area and identifying regulatory constraints. Following completion of the inventory and base mapping, the team will collaborate with nARCHITECTS to identify opportunities for low-impact redevelopment of the site and to identify options for a trail network throughout the Mastic Beach Conservation Area.
The project will involve working with a Project Advisory Committee to identify and evaluate options through the process to select a preferred alternative for the site redevelopment and trail network; design and prepare content for new interpretive signage; and develop final construction documents for the selected use of the site.
