National Bird Day!

There are over 240 different species of birds that breed in the state of NY and more than 450 that spend part of the year here in a wide variety of habitats. Birds help contribute to a healthy and beneficial ecosystem in many ways, which is commonly referred to as “ecosystem services”. Some ways birds help contribute to the environment include eating about 6,000 insects for each brood of baby birds they hatch and through the transportation of seeds (while snacking on their favorite delicious seeds and berries of course); birds engage in seed-dropping distribution which cultivates new plants. Since 1970, bird populations have declined by about 35% due to changes in the types of plants that we are planting. It is important to select and plant native plants that protect the environment, habitats and enrich our ecosystems.
