Bird Deterrence

Posted August 28, 2024 In News

Bird deterrence can be a crucial component of a successful and sustainable project. To protect birds and naturalized areas associated with the project site from harm, NPV works with project sponsors to implement selective deterrent methods specific to the circumstances of the project site. NPV is currently providing avian deterrent and monitoring services for a public utility installation project in Hempstead Bay. Temporary ground deterrents such as “scarecrow” tape were implemented to deter migratory birds from nesting within the proposed areas of disturbance prior to the commencement of construction. Temporary deterrents were also placed on historic osprey nesting platforms proximate to the proposed areas of disturbance. New platform/nesting sites were installed to provide ospreys with an alternative nesting site within the same visual corridor but removed from the active construction buffer area. These temporary deterrents, which will no longer be necessary once construction is complete, protect the birds during the construction process. Separate ground deterrents will be installed as part of the native habitat restoration process (post construction) to protect the newly installed native vegetation from impacts associated with avian predation.
