Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue Emergency
Power Supply & Building Hardening

Project Location: Atlantic Beach, NY
Client: Town of Hempstead / Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue

Nelson + Pope prepared plans for storm hardening of the Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue Building, including a new generator, building flood proofing, and improved boat rescue access.  The project was funded by a grant from the New York Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery through the Town of Hempstead for the Atlantic Beach Fire Rescue Company in response to damage from Superstorm Sandy.  The building had an existing natural gas engine generator during the storm, but gas utility outages necessitated a new diesel engine generator.  A diesel generator was specified, and the design included modifications to the electric service equipment and two transfer switches to allow the gas engine generator to serve as the primary back-up for the building with the diesel generator a secondary back-up.  The project also included replacing all pedestrian doors with new flood resistant doors and installing removable flood barriers for apparatus bay doors.  To aid in water rescue response a new boat lift was installed for launching rescue craft, and modifications were made to an existing floating dock to secure it during future storm events.
